Godspeed You! Black Emperor was formed in 1994 in Montreal, Quebec, by Efrim Menuck (guitar), Mike Moya (guitar), and Mauro Pezzente (bass).[13][14] The band took its name from God Speed You! Black Emperor, a 1976 Japanese black-and-white documentary by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of a Japanese biker gang, the Black Emperors.[13] The band initially assembled after being offered a supporting act for another local band named Steak 72.[15] Thereafter, the trio performed live on a few separate occasions. Previously, the name "God Speed You Black Emperor!" had been used by Menuck on a limited cassette entitled All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling that had been recorded the year prior, with limited contributions by Pezzente on bass, although it would not be until 1994 that the actual band formed.

The group takes its name from a 1976 black-and-white Japanese biker film. The group's debut recording, All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling, was released in 1994 and limited to thirty-three copies on cassette. Due to its rarity, the album became a Missing Episode for almost thirty years, having gone unheard outside the band's circle of friends and Constellation Records (which allegedly still owns a copy of the album). Two tracks of it were uploaded in 2013 and were confirmed to be legitimate, but the full album only surfaced online in 2022, two weeks before it was uploaded to the band's official Bandcamp.
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven is the kind of album that the word difficult was created to describe. It is an album that demands you sit down and listen and be willing to be drawn into the worlds godspeed you black emperor! creates. It is not just something you can throw on your stereo for background noise or for a quick burst of music. For those willing to do so, though, the music will take you to its worlds, on journeys and evoke a wide range of emotions. It is definitely worth the time and patience.
